CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION

SECTION

The Criminal Investigation Section is comprised of five Detectives, under the direction of a Detective Sergeant Eric Singiser. The primary function of the Criminal Investigation Section is to conduct criminal investigations of serious crimes or those cases requiring extensive follow up after a complaint has been taken by a Patrol Officer. In addition to their criminal investigative duties, Detectives are assigned to the Forensic Identification Unit, Polygraph Unit and Drug Investigation Unit. The Detectives also served as liaisons with various agencies when planning special events in the Township in which extra security is needed.

Polygraph Unit

The Polygraph Unit of the Township of Derry Police Department started in 1980 at which time a Lafayette Pentograph Polygraph instrument was purchased and subsequently used by the Police Department for both pre-employment and criminal polygraph examinations. Polygraph examinations have been conducted continuous since that time by the department.

The purpose if the Polygraph Unit is to provide all other sections, units and members of the department with an "Investigative tool" that will assist them in conducting criminal investigations.

Polygraph services are provided and implemented through the Polygraph Unit which is part if the Criminal Investigation Section and falls under the direct command of the CI Section Sergeant. a Detective is assigned as the OIC of the unit and is responsible for maintaining the Polygraph Suite, the instrument and all polygraph records and when approved by the CI Sergeant conducts all polygraph examinations for the department.

The department also provides polygraph services to all surrounding jurisdictions not having a Polygraph Examiner whenever time and manpower permits.

Drug Investigation Unit

One Detective is assigned to the Drug Investigation Unit conduct investigations into the use and sale of illegal narcotics within Derry Township, and are also assigned to the Dauphin County Drug Task Force to investigate drug sales at the County level.

The detective works closely with Drug Task Force members, agents from the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency, Attorney General Office, Pennsylvania State Police and local law enforcement agencies to take a pro-active approach to the war on drugs. Surveillance, undercover operations and the use of informants are some of the methods used to aid in their investigations
